The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the world's most widely recognized Japanese language certification, with five levels from N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced). Passing the JLPT is a common goal for students, professionals, and anyone serious about demonstrating their Japanese ability.
Hirakata's vocabulary section covers all five levels — over 8,000 words in total. Each word includes the kanji form, kana reading, and English definition. Study in JP→EN or EN→JP direction, toggle furigana readings on or off, and shuffle your deck for randomized practice.
Study mode shows each word on a flashcard. Tap or press Space to reveal the answer, then move forward or back through the deck. Quiz mode presents a word and four multiple-choice answers — immediate feedback helps reinforce the correct meaning. Type mode requires you to type the answer, building stronger active recall than recognition alone.
Start with N5 if you're new to Japanese vocabulary — it covers around 800 essential words used in everyday speech. Once you've built a solid foundation, work your way up through N4, N3, N2, and N1. You can also mix levels to study across multiple tiers at once. No account or installation required — progress is saved locally in your browser.
